A cape tied around small shoulders. A crown placed slightly crooked. A pair of wings—and suddenly the sitting room is no longer the sitting room.
It is a hidden forest, a faraway kingdom or the starting point of an important adventure.
Children rarely need very much to begin a story. A simple costume can be enough to transform an ordinary afternoon and invite them into a world entirely of their own making. They might become a fearless knight, a woodland creature, a magician or a character that does not yet have a name. The story changes as they play—and that is part of the magic.
Dressing up is more than dressing up
Imaginative play gives children the freedom to experiment with ideas, emotions and different ways of seeing the world. They make decisions, invent problems, negotiate roles and discover their own solutions, often without realising how much they are learning along the way.
